Crossing comprises of paintings, drawings and videos, which were developed during the last three years. During this time Anita Groener traveled about 12,000 kilometers by car; between Ireland and the continent, within The Netherlands and within Ireland. These long journeys became a catalyst for her studio practice and re-informed her concerns. The verb Crossing signifies movement, a movement which is not uniform but which is drawn back and forth. In my drawings I try to capture the delineation of movements of thought processes occurring in space and time, between here and there, between the point of departure and arrival. The journey of the line marks the surface turning it into visual patterns. What you see is a physical manifestation of the layers of routes and directions taken in this process, revealing its manifold meanings. Crossing is a journey into the process and shapes of the amorphous nature of being, explored within the ideas and passage of time. It explores the effect of choices of identity in contemporary society and culture. These concerns are investigated trying to find the most minimal and effective gestures and symbols for communication in the videos, drawings and paintings. The artist also explores the relationship of drawing and painting using materials such as oilstick, tempera and blackboard paint. Anita Groener was born in The Netherlands and qualified with a MA in painting from the 'Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (Academy of Visual Arts), in Arnhem in 1982. She moved to Ireland in the same year and continues to live in County Dublin. She has exhibited extensively in Ireland and abroad and is represented in the collections of The Arts Council of Ireland, Dublin Institute of Technology, A.I.B, ABN AMRO, Ulster Bank and the National Drawing Archive. The artist has been awarded two Creative Practice Awards to assist her in the development of this work, from the Dublin Institute of Technology, where she has been a lecturer in fine art and painting for many years. She is currently the Acting Head of the Department of Fine Art in the Dublin Institute of Technology. The artist was elected a member of Aosdana in May 2005. This exhibition runs in two venues, the RHA Gallery and the Rubicon Gallery, Dublin and is accompanied by a hard back, full colour catalogue of the new work.
