1. The Hennessy Craig Scholarship - €10,000
2011 recipient: Francis Matthews & Hugh Delap
This prize in memory of H. Robertson Craig RHA and Patrick Hennessy RHA, was created through a generous bequest to the Academy by H. Robertson Craig and the terms under which it is awarded are those specified in his will.
The Scholarship is open to any painter under the age of thirty-five exhibiting in the open submission section of the Academy’s Annual Exhibition. The painter must have studied at a recognised art college on the island of Ireland. The award of €10,000 is to enable the painter to pursue a course of further self-determined study either in Ireland or abroad.
Applicants for the Scholarship will be required to furnish the Academy with an outline of their proposed study project for its approval. The successful candidate will be chosen by the Selection Committee of the Academy’s Annual Exhibition, solely on the merit of the work submitted by artists to that Annual Exhibition.

The Elizabeth Fitzpatrick Bursary at the RHA
This travel scholarship, worth €2500, is awarded to an Irish Citizen or those born on the island of Ireland under the age of 35 who plan to study abroad. It is named in memory of Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, a lifelong friend and supporter of the visual arts in Ireland. The Purser family, into which Elizabeth was born in 1904, was part of a Dublin community with many artistic affiliations. Between 1930 and 1980, Elizabeth was closely connected with many of the leading artists and cultural figures of the time, including Sarah Purser – her great aunt – Jack Yeats, ‘AE’, Mainie Jellet and Mary Swanzy.
The Elizabeth Fitzpatrick Bursary is selected from applications by the three youngest Members of the Academy. The award will be offered again in 2012. Congratulations to the winner of the 2010 Elizabeth Fitzpatrick Bursary, Maggie Madden, whose work is included as part of the award, in this year’s Annual Exhibition.
