In addition to scheduled talks the RHA encourages group visits from schools and colleges, for which tours are arranged on request. RHA Children’s Workshops
Programme of Events, July to December 2009

Children's Workshop    Children's Workshop

Led by artists Michelle Considine and Sheila Rennick, each workshop will be built on themes relating to current exhibitions and to holiday themes. Each session will provide each child with a hands on art experience along with an tour of the exhibition designed for the younger art audience. Workshops will take place in the gallery using our specially designed Art Cart and in the studios.

Classes are strictly limited to 15 places and run from 2pm to 4pm. Each class will cost €15 per child and includes all tuition and materials. Classes are suitable for children aged between 5 and 12.

Places can be booked by emailing kids@rhagallery.ie or telephoning 01 6612558

Saturday, 6 June - Creative Canvas!
To begin our series of monthly children’s workshops we will be going back to basics and giving the children the chance to paint on their own canvases. The inspiration should be flowing after a tour of the Annual Exhibition and some drawing with our Art Cart in the main gallery. Each child will take its own ‘creative canvas’ home.

Saturday, 4 July - Mastering Mosaics
This workshop will focus on mosaics, collage and abstract design. Beginning with a tour of the Annual exhibition, we will be showing the kids some abstract and non-figurative paintings and giving them the opportunity to sit in the gallery drawing and exploring ideas, before going to work on their own abstract mosaic masterpieces in the RHA studio.

Saturday, 8 August - Theatre & Puppets
Taking place upstairs in the RHA studio, this workshop will give children the opportunity to design and make their own theatre and puppets. Using cardboard boxes, collage, felt, wool and other materials we will be guiding the children to construct a simple theatre backdrop and create a puppet (or two) with which they can put on their own play.
This fun workshop will encourage play and interaction.

Saturday, 12 September - Mobile Madness
Beginning with a tour of the exhibition and taking inspiration from the playful art of Nevan Lahart, the children will be given a workshop upstairs in the studios making colorful, hanging mobiles. Using a range of materials provided by the gallery they will be able to create some original designs for mobiles they can bring home and hang in their bedrooms. The children will also work in groups to make some more elaborate mobiles.

Saturday, 30 October - Spooky mask-making workshop
For our Halloween workshop we will be making papier-mâché masks and seeing what goulish, scary masks the children can come up with! Children are welcome to come in fancy dress and this fun workshop will also have face painting and special treats for the kid’s after the class.

Saturday, 7 November - Making Faces
Portrait painting for kids! Beginning with a tour of the exhibitions focusing on the portraits hung in the galleries, the children will get the opportunity to then create their own self-portraits. They will be given simple guidelines as to how to draw a face, and how to add expression and mood to their portrait. All children are asked to bring a small mirror with them.

Saturday, 5 December - Festive Fun! RHA Christmas Workshop
We’ll begin our Christmas workshop with a tour of the exhibition on display and some drawing in gallery one with the Art Cart. After this we will head up to the studios to start making Christmas decorations, cards and Santa hats with all kinds of surprises and festive fun included.

RHA Drawing Marathon

A two-week drawing marathon took place in the newly built group studio at the RHA last November, following the reopening of the gallery and to launch the RHA School studios.

Week one was for younger emerging artists, some who have shown in the Annual and others who were invited because of their dedication to drawing. The second week included established artists, Members of the Academy and artists who have exhibited in previous Annual exhibitions.

Two models were working at any given time and attendance varied from 18 – 30 people. The intention of the drawing marathon was to inaugurate the tremendous new studio spaces that will be at the core of the schools activities. It afforded artists who usually work in solitary in their studio space the opportunity to work together and of course to socialise together!

Mick O’Dea, RHA School Principal Elect has been a Member of the RHA since 1993, when he was elected ARHA and became a full Member in 1996. Having served on the Council and various boards of the Academy including being Treasurer for a year, Mick also has extensive teaching experience at 3rd level having taught in Ireland, the UK and USA.

The School at the RHA is committed to ensuring that this generation of artists will have access to a comprehensive training in drawing with particular emphasis on drawing from observation.
