Born in Washington D.C. in 1941. After five years at the Jesuit school, Georgetown Prep., he went to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) 1958 – 1962 graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (Painting) in 1962. After military service (US Army ) in Germany (1963 – 1965) he returned to the States resuming his work as a painter and won a Fulbright Fellowship to Berlin (1967 – 1968). He later was a Meisterschüler to Prof. Peter Jansen, Hochschule fur Bildende Künst (1968 – 1971). In 1971 he move to Ireland (Dublin).
He has shown in many one-man and group exhibitions over the years – including his first one man show at the Project Arts Centre in 1973. He was represented by the Tom Caldwell Gallery from 1975 – 1981 and the Taylor Galleries from 1982 to the present day. He is included in public and private collections both here and abroad.

He was a part time lecturer (Painting and Life Drawing) at the National College of Art & Design (NCAD) 1975 – 2000. He has won many prizes for his work over the years including as a student the top prize at RISD for painting (the Providence Arts Club Scholarship Award 1961).
One of the major prizes in the 1975 Irish Exhibition of Living Arts, first prize Dun Laoghaire Arts Week, 1978. He was elected Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy, 21st January 2003. He has shown annually in the RHA, Irish Exhibition of Living Art and he Figurative Image Group.
Mr. Potter lives in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.
