Brian Fallon was born at Cootehill, Co Cavan in 1933, the second son of the poet Padraic Fallon. He was educated at St Peter’s College, Wexford, and TCD. Joined the staff of The Irish Times in 1953, as a sub-editor, and became successively Features Editor, Arts Editor, and Literary Editor (1977-88).
Art Critic from 1963 to 1998, when he retired. Has written several books, including ‘An Age of Innocence: Irish Culture 1930-1960’ and various art monographs, and has contributed to many exhibition catalogues, journals and newspapers, as well as lecturing widely.
He has also edited the writings of his late father for Irish and English publishers, including the Carcanet Press. He is married to Marion FitzGerald, journalist and broadcaster, and they have seven children.
